A sprag clutch is a free-wheel device. They are similar to roller bearings but with the cylindrical rollers replaced with non-revolving asymmetric figure-eight shaped sprags. As the unit is rotated in one direction the rollers free-wheel permitting over-running between races but if torque is applied in the opposite direction, the rollers will tilt slightly, producing a wedging action and transmitting the torque from one race to the other.
