Thrust washers are flat, disk shaped, flat bearings in the shape of a washer used as the bearing surface for rotary applications in order to transmit axial forces in rotating mechanisms to keep components aligned along a shaft. Usually made of steel, bronze or other materials with low friction coefficients, thrust washers are particularly useful where space is limited as they have a narrow profile and are an economical alternative to rolling thrust bearings when working with moderate forces. Thrust washers differ from normal washers in that they must carry a bearing load and not wear out over time. Oilite thrust washers are manufactured from a porous bronze that is impregnated with oil to provide self-lubricating thrust surfaces.

Thrust washers work best when kept clean and lubricated and are the most economical and easy to apply of all the thrust bearing alrernatives.
